Behold

by Bob Conar, Bible Study created November 2001

The word "Behold" is found a little over 1300 times in the Bible. Some of the meanings include: Lo! See; Lo! expressing surprise; To see, gaze, look upon; To gaze at, contemplate, look; To look intently at.

The First Occurrence is in the first chapter of the Bible, following creation. Genesis 1:31, And God saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

The Last Occurrence is in the last chapter of the Bible. Revelation 22:12 And, behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to give to every man according as his work shall be.

The word "Behold" is an integral part of the Bible.

"Behold" was there right after the Fall of Man. Genesis 3:22-24, And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. Therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So He drove out the man; and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

"Behold" was there when Abraham was told to sacrifice Isaac. Genesis 22:1-2, And it came to pass after these things, that God did test Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham: and he said, Behold, here I am. And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I tell thee of.

Looking unto the Lamb. Genesis 22:7-13, And Isaac spake unto Abrahem his father, and said, My father; and he said, Here am I, my son. And he said, Behold the fire and the wood: but where is the lamb for a burnt offering? And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in a thicket by his horns: and Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt offering in the stead of his son. John 1:29, Behold, the Lamb of God that taketh away the sin of the world!

Good Advice, Good News, Praise.

Numbers 32:23, But if ye will not do so, behold, ye have sinned against the Lord: and be sure your sin will find you out.

1 Samuel 15:22, And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Deuteronomy 10:14, Behold, the heaven and the heaven of heavens is the Lord's thy God, the earth also, with all that therein is.

Psalm 17:15, As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.

Psalm 27:4, One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the Lord, and to inquire in his temple.

Psalm 33:18, Behold, the eye of the Lord is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy.

Psalm 54::4 Behold, God is mine helper: the Lord is with them that uphold my soul.

Prophesies Concerning Christ. Isaiah 7:14, Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel. Isaiah 28:16, Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.

Prophesies Fulfilled Concerning Christ. Matthew 1:20-23 But while Joseph thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be filfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Christ's Death. Matthew 27:51, And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

Christ Arose. Mark 16:6, And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

Prophesies Concerning Heaven. Isaiah 65:17, For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered, nor come into mind.

Prophesies Fulfilled Concerning Heaven. Revelation 21:3-6, And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away. And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all things new. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and faithful. And he said unto me, It is done. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life freely.
